The Pass at Byron Bay is not a wave you attack. It is a wave you wait for. The takeoff zone is soft, the sections are fickle, and the best rides come from reading the bump before it forms, not from driving through a closeout.


That means your fin setup needs to prioritise glide and pivot over hold and drive. A longboard single fin in the 9 to 10 inch range is the classic choice. A twin fin with moderate rake works too, especially on a fish or a mid-length. What does not work is a thruster with stiff, upright fins. You will stall, fight for speed, and watch the wave run away while you fight the tail.


The locals have known this for decades. The Pass is a longboard wave first, a twin fin wave second, and everything else a distant third.


Why The Pass Is Different from Other Points


Most point breaks in Australia have a defined peak, a steep takeoff, and a wall that runs for a set distance. Burleigh has the ledge. Kirra has the barrel. Snapper has the bowl.


The Pass has none of that.


It is a slow-building swell that wraps around Cape Byron and runs down a series of rock shelves. The wave does not pitch. It lifts. The takeoff is gentle enough that you can paddle in from the channel and still make it. The sections form and reform depending on the sand, the tide, and the swell direction.


This changes everything about fin choice.


On a steep wave, you need hold. You need the fin to bite and keep the tail tracking through a vertical turn. On The Pass, you need the opposite. You need the tail to release easily so you can pivot through the fat sections. You need glide to cover the flat spots between bumps. You need a fin that lets the board surf itself while you read what the wave is doing next.


That is why a 9.5 inch pivot fin on a 9 foot log is the default setup. It gives you enough area to hold trim on the face, enough pivot to turn in the pocket, and enough forgiveness to let the wave do the work.


What the Locals Actually Ride


Walk up the point on a good south swell and you will see a pattern.


The longboard crew runs single fins, mostly in the 9 to 10 inch range. The older guys favour a traditional pivot with a wide tip for noseriding hold. The younger crew runs a slightly smaller fin, 8.5 to 9 inches, with a bit more rake for generating drive through the longer sections.


The twin fin crew runs mellow templates. Upright twins with a short base and tight rake are too twitchy for the wave's pace. A twin with moderate sweep, something in the 4.5 to 5 inch range, lets the board carry speed through the fat sections without feeling loose.


The mid-length crew is growing fast. Boards in the 7 to 8 foot range with a 2 plus 1 setup are everywhere. A single fin with side bites gives you the glide for the soft sections and the option to engage the rail when the wave offers a wall.


What you do not see much of is thrusters. They work if you are surfing the inside section near the rocks where the wave steepens up. But for the main point, from the carpark down to the Wreck, a thruster is fighting the wave's nature.


How Tide and Swell Change the Setup


The Pass is a different wave at different tides, and your fin choice should shift with it.


On a low tide south swell, the wave runs faster and steeper over the exposed rock shelves. You can get away with a slightly smaller fin or a twin setup because the wave provides its own drive. Dropping from a 9.5 to a 9 inch single fin gives you more manoeuvrability without losing trim.


On a high tide, the wave fattens out. The sections get softer and the flat spots get longer. This is where a bigger fin helps. A 10 inch pivot or a single fin with more area keeps the board gliding through the slow sections. If you are on twins, go for a template with more base and sweep to maintain momentum.


On a north swell, The Pass is smaller and more inconsistent. The wave barely forms on the main point. This is a longboard-only day. A big single fin, 10 inches or more, is the only way to make the most of the weak energy.


Why the Twin Fin Works Here


The Pass is one of the few Australian point breaks where a twin fin is genuinely better than a thruster for the main wave.


The reason is speed maintenance. A thruster generates hold through drag. The centre fin keeps the tail planted, which is great for driving off the bottom on a steep face. But on a slow, sectiony wave, that drag works against you. You have to work harder to maintain speed between sections.


A twin fin has less drag. The tail releases more easily, which means you can pivot through the fat sections without losing momentum. The tradeoff is less hold on the takeoff and less drive through a committed turn. But on The Pass, the tradeoff is worth it.


The key is choosing the right twin template. Upright twins with a short base and minimal rake are too loose. They pivot well but they do not carry speed through the flat sections. A twin with moderate rake, something in the 25 to 30 degree range, gives you the best of both worlds. Enough pivot for the pocket, enough drive for the glide.

The Pass rewards patience and glide. If you are surfing it for the first time, start with a longboard single fin around 9.5 inches. If you are on a twin, go for a template with moderate rake and let the wave set the pace.


The fin that works at Burleigh or Kirra will not necessarily work here. That is the beauty of the place. It forces you to think about what the wave actually needs, not what you want to ride.
